An Introduction to Hazardous Material Management Program

Material Management Program

The bio-products invention has aided mankind in many notable ways. The use of insecticides and fertilizers are worthy mentions that help in the growth of crops and plants even in inappropriate conditions. But, the chemicals are harmful as well as they can take a toll on the environment that we live in. When the chemicals are used in huge quantities, they definitely pose a great threat. The term that describes the harmful stuff is hazmat. These days, the use of chemicals is on the rise with a lot of industries and factories making use of them all over the world. Eventually, every country is coming up with several hazardous material management programs.

The hazardous material management programs classify the harmful stuff into nine segments or categories such as gases, radioactive, explosives, oxidizers, liquid flammables and combustibles, corrosive, solid flammables and combustibles, poison and miscellaneous and dangerous. Apart from these, even the bio-waste belongs is classified as hazmat. Bio-waste includes scabs from blood waste, polio shots, used needles, etc. While transporting such harmful items, additional care has to be taken as even the slightest error can result in a great mishap causing massive threats to the environment.

To make the recognition of hazmat elements easier, number and color codes are given to specify the hazard types. For instance, the health hazards are given blue color, flame hazards are indicated by red color, and special types of hazards are given white color. The hazardous material management program includes the specification of numbers to the elements pointing the degree of the threat. For instance, 0 is the lowest and 4 is the highest level of threat that the element can cause, and these items are ranked accordingly.

In order to increase the awareness of the harmful items, there are seminars related to safety measures that are conducted all over the world. These seminars deal with the guidelines that have to be followed when handling such stuff such as the garments to wear, the method of handling these items, etc. Such programs also provide training sessions with different training for the personnel in charge of the air, sea, rail and road shipments. They are also trained with information about marking labeling, packing and other procedures that are a part of the shipping process.
